Breda: Goud voor Nederlands ponyteam en Bram Chardon
BREDA (KNHS) – De Nederlandse ponyrijders lieten zich vandaag van hun sterkste kant zien en sleepten voor de tweede opeenvolgende keer het WK-teamgoud in de wacht. Bram Chardon (Schipluiden) bewees opnieuw een klasse apart te zijn door koelbloedig de klus foutloos af te maken in de afsluitende vaardigheidsproef. De 22-jarige zoon van IJsbrand en Paulien Chardon sleepte zijn derde gouden medaille op rij in de wacht met zijn vierspan pony’s.De regen liet Breda vandaag eindelijk links liggen waardoor de vaardigheid van het FEI WK ponymennen op het hoofdterrein van Outdoor Brabant in een mooie finale eindigde. Parcoursbouwer Jeroen Houterman (Meterik) had een mooi parcours uitgezet wat veel spannende momenten opleverde.
Bij de enkelspannen ging het goud naar de Duitser Fabian Gänshirt, het zilver werd opgeëist door de Hongaar Martin Hölle en het brons was voor de Duitse Katja Helpertz. Hoewel er geen Nederlander in de medailles viel, hadden de zilveren en bronzen medaille wel een oranje randje. Hölle wordt namelijk getraind door Mieke van Tergouw van Riant in Beekbergen en Katja Helpertz krijgt training van voormalig vierspan ponyrijder Ton Hendriks uit het Limburgse Lomm.
Marissa Schuiling (Herveld) eindigde als beste Nederlandse op de zevende plaats, nipt voor Tamara Pijl (Loosdrecht). Schuiling reed een snelle en strakke vaardigheidsproef en was op weg op een foutloze rit ruim binnen de toegestane tijd neer te zetten, toen er een balletje rolde op de laatste poort. Ook teamleden Pijl en Arion Vissers (Rucphen) liepen strafpunten op waardoor het Duitse team dat Nederland op de nek zat, voor kwam te staan.
De ervaren Ewoud Boom (Nijkerk) zette iedereen weer op scherp door als eerste zonder fouten over de finish te komen. Even later deed Woutera van de Kamp (Ermelo) hetzelfde en schreef de individueel deelneemster dit laatste onderdeel verdiend op haar naam. Dirk Neerincx (Elst, Gld.) reed eveneens zeer sterk en kwam met een afgeworpen balletje uit de ring waardoor de spanning voor het landenklassement er flink in bleef. De Britse Anna Grayston won individueel goud, voor de Duitser Jan-Felix Pfeffer en de Oostenrijker Stefan Bösch. Van de Kamp werd prachtig vierde, op minimaal verschil gevolgd door Dirk Neerincx en Ewoud Boom op de zevende plaats. Met Karel van Kekem (Hoogblokland) en Rodinde Rutjens (Weert) op plaats negen en tien eindigde de voltallige Nederlandse afvaardiging in deze rubriek in de top tien.

The 26-year-old Fabian Gänshirt finished fifth in dressage and third in the very heavy marathon. After dressage and marathon he took the lead in the standings. In the final obstacle driving competition he only had very few time penalties and was absolutely thrilled to be able to secure his gold medal at his first ever World Championship. Gänshirt, who won the CAIO Minden this year with his 8-year-old German riding pony David L, was very happy: “The dressage went ok for me, but I know my pony can do better. The atmosphere in Breda was different and caused some tension with my pony. In the marathon I started quite modest but after obstacle one went well, I started driving and fully went for it which resulted in fast times.” Gänshirt felt the pressure before he went into the cones arena after Martin Hölle drove clear: “I said to myself ‘stay cool’! This pony is unbelievable, this is only the second year that I drive him and the first season that we compete at this level.”
The silver medal went to defending World Champion Martin Hölle from Hungary, who competed with his World Championship pony Apache de la Licorne. Hölle won the dressage but dropped to the second place after the marathon, which was tortured with heavy rain showers all day. The 18-year old student went for it in the cones: “I came here for the first place, so in the cones I felt I had nothing to loose, only something to win.” Hölle is planning to compete with a horse pair from next season but he will keep competing in the single pony class at the same time to be able to compete again in the 2017 FEI World Pony Driving Championships.
Second German team member Katja Helpertz took home the bronze medal, driving her New Forest pony Nordstern´s Stoertebecker. The 23-year-old law student moved up to the third place in the standings after finishing second in the marathon.
Both Hölle and Helpertz are trained by Dutch trainers, which gave their medal an orange touch.
After winning bronze at the previous World Championships in Pau 2013, Anna Grayston was finally able to finish the job in Breda and was crowned World Champion in the Pony Pairs Class. Grayston finished second in dressage and held on to her leading position after the marathon. After second placed driver Christof Weihe (GER) had left the cones arena with over 20 penalty points, the 43-year-old Carriage driving coach had over 15 penalty points advantage to her opponents. She knocked two balls down and had time penalties, but this did not endanger her golden medal. Grayston however was not sure of where she had ended up when she finished and only realized that she had won after the speaker had announced it: “I didn’t know how much I had in my hand so I only knew that I had won when I came out of the arena!” Grayston used the same ponies in her dressage pair as at the 2009 World Championships in Greven and used one of the leaders of her pony team which she drove at the 2005 World Championships in Catton: “I haven’t used this dressage pair in Lipica or Pau, I decided to use them again because the judges like bigger paces in dressage. I sold my leader pony of Catton to one of my grooms and I got it back in February. I use it just for the marathon and with getting the pony back, I also got my groom back as back stepper in the marathon!”
Dressage winner Jan-Felix Pfeffer dropped to the fourth place after the marathon but as his compatriot Weihe had too many faults in the cones, the German Vice Champion 2014 and 2015 moved up to silver. Austria’s Stefan Bösch finished second in the marathon and moved up to bronze before the cones. He was able to hold on to this position despite one knock down.
Nadat de beide Duitse teamleden Tobias Bücker en Steffen Brauchle met de nodige strafpunten de ring uit kwamen, had het Nederlandse team de leiding in het klassement weer in handen. Jan de Boer had strafpunten voor een afgeworpen balletje en tijdsoverschrijding, zodat het lot van het Nederlandse team in handen lag van Bram Chardon. De titelverdediger had inmiddels ruim 23 strafpunten voorsprong op zijn concurrenten, maar geen haar op zijn hoofd die er aan dacht het rustig aan te doen. Chardon reed een vaardigheidsproef uit het boekje en passeerde koelbloedig de finish zonder ook maar een enkele fout. Hiermee stelde hij zowel zijn derde gouden medaille als het teamgoud zeker. Brauchle kreeg het zilver omgehangen, het brons ging naar de Belg Nathan Nijs. Jan de Boer greep net naast het podium en werd vierde, voor Joey van der Ham (Noordwijk), die een zeer sterk WK-debuut maakte. Aart van de Kamp jr. (Ermelo) en Jannes Kinds (Balloo) eindigden op de respectievelijke negende en tiende plaats.
Bondscoach Ad Aarts (Liessel) was een tevreden man na de vaardigheid: “Ik heb de juiste keuze voor de teamleden gemaakt en daar ben ik heel blij om, het is altijd een heel gepuzzel. Ik ben blij dat we gisteren in de marathon al flink hebben uitgehaald waardoor we iets op voorsprong stonden in het landenklassement. Het was een geweldig spannende wedstrijd vandaag!”

And that makes three! 22-year-old Bram Chardon set the competition in Breda to his hand and left no room for his opponents. He won all three phases of the competition and won his third consecutive individual gold medal. Chardon jr. started well in the dressage despite the heavy footing because of the rain showers. In the marathon he felt the breath of second placed Steffen Brauchle (GER) in his neck and decided to go for it: “I saw Brauchle in obstacle one, he took the short route and went so fast that I decided to go for it from the beginning. I had Aachen still fresh in my memory where my father IJsbrand lost it in the marathon to Steffen’s brother Michael and I didn’t want that to happen to me!”
After dressage and marathon, Chardon jr. had an advantage of over 23 penalty points to Brauchle, so he could take it easy. But Bram proofed his professionalism and finished the job cool blooded by putting down the only double clear round of his class, driving the same grey Welsh ponies as with which he won the title in Pau in 2013.
Steffen Brauchle was the deserved silver medalist, finishing second in dressage and third in the marathon with his German riding ponies. 21-year-old Nathan Nijs took the bronze medal from Belgium. Nijs finished second in the marathon, which he could have won if he had not had a hick up in the last obstacle. After dressage, in which he drove his self-manufactured carriage, and marathon, Nathan was in third place and was able to hold on to this position despite two knockdowns and some time penalties.
