Aachen: Dutch dominance in the Driven Dressage
De Nederlandse vierspanrijders domineerden de dressuur van het Europees Kampioenschap in Aken. Onder aanvoering van viervoudig Wereldkampioen IJsbrand Chardon (Schipluiden) en regerend Europees Kampioen Theo Timmerman (Varsseveld) gaat het Nederlandse vierspanteam ruim aan de leiding in het tussenklassement. Koos de Ronde (Zwartewaal) staat momenteel op de vierde plaats in het individuele klassement.IJsbrand Chardon was second to go this morning and the 26 times Dutch Champion put down the winning test, despite a small mistake in the second walk when his right leader horse trotted: “I am very pleased with my performance, apart from the walk. The horses formed a nice team together and my wheeler horses were very good today. If the walk had gone well as well, this would have been my best test of the season,” explains Chardon.
Defending European individual and team Champion Theo Timmerman competes this season with two new horses in the wheel of his team. At the start of this season his team would not come together very well, but today in the sunny and beautiful Driving Stadium in Aachen, it all worked out for him: “Our goal this season was to prepare for the FEI World Championships 2016 in Breda. If things had not worked out, that would have been our own choice. We decided not to start in Riesenbeck earlier this month, we drove a national competition instead to build the four-in-hand even more. It went very well there and also in the training session with our national coach Harry de Ruyter, who kept faith in us. It is super that it worked out well today!”
Juan Antonio Real Garcia, who was the first starter today, took the third place. Real Garcia is trained by triple World Champion Boyd Exell (AUS), who also helped him in Aachen. The multiple Spanish four-in-hand Champion competes with two horses from the four-in-hand with which Exell won gold at the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games in Normandy 2014. The horses are owned by Juan’s employer Ernesto Colman Mena (URU), an international four-in-hand driver himself. “I am very pleased with my test, despite two small mistakes. One of my leaders had a break in the walk and during the one-handed circle, which was a pity.” It is the first time that Real Garcia competes with these four horses in this setting. He trains them at home, but in competition, three of the horses belong to Colman’s team and one is driven by Real Garcia.
The fourth place was taken by Koos de Ronde, who drove a completely different set of wheeler horses than he originally had planned, due to injuries. Hungarian drivers Zoltán Lázár and József Dobrovitz set the same score in dressage and finished on the fifth place, putting the Hungarian team on the second place in the Nations competition standings. The most experienced Belgian driver Felix-Marie Brasseur, who will say farewell to the active competition sport after the European Championships because of lack of sponsors, and young Edouard Simonet finished on the 7th and 8th place respectively with a nearly equal score of 48,79 and 48.90.
Michael Brauchle, whose best phase normally is the marathon, put down the best German performance in dressage. Brauchle finished on the 9th place and is followed in the ranking by his team members Georg von Stein and Christoph Sandmann.

IJsbrand Chardon zette vanmorgen als tweede starter de winnende proef neer in het zonovergoten menstadion in Aken. De 26-voudig Nederlands Kampioen reed op een fout in de stap na een sterke proef en gaat hiermee aan kop in het Europees Kampioenschap: “Ik ben super tevreden, op de stap na. Hierbij dribbelde mijn rechtervoorpaard, wat me een aantal punten heeft gekost. Maar het achterspan was erg goed, het span liep als een blok.”
Titelverdediger Theo Timmerman was een van de laatste starters vandaag en alle ogen waren op hem gericht. Timmerman reed een aanvallende proef en liet veel schwung zien. Timmerman had zich dit seizoen als doel gesteld zijn vierspan met twee nieuwe achterpaarden klaar te stomen voor het Wereldkampioenschap vierspannen 2016 in Breda: “We hebben begin van dit seizoen wat problemen gehad met de voorpaarden. De eerste wedstrijden verliepen niet naar wens en daarom ben ik begin deze maand op een nationale wedstrijd in Beesd gestart in plaats van op de landenwedstrijd in Riesenbeck. Hier liep het span heel goed en ook in de daaropvolgende training. Ik heb gelukkig steeds het vertrouwen gekregen van onze bondscoach Harry de Ruyter (Kessel, Lb.) en vandaag lukte het allemaal.” Timmerman staat momenteel op zilver.
Koos de Ronde reed op woensdag al dressuur en reed eveneens een sterke proef, waarmee hij uiteindelijk vierde werd. De Ronde reed met een geheel ander achterspan dan oorspronkelijk gepland: “Mijn gebruikelijke achterpaarden Santana en Alino bleken voor vertrek niet fit, dus ik heb de drie dagen voordat ik naar Aken afreisde nog een alternatief achterspan moeten samenstellen. Ik heb gekozen voor mijn marathonpaard Zimba, aangezien de marathon in Aken heel zwaar is en ik niet alles op de dressuur wilde inzetten. Palero verving Alino en met deze twee heb ik twee goede allrounders in mijn span. Het voorspan liep perfect, hierbij vielen alle puzzelstukjes op z’n plek. Ik ben blij met mijn score, dit is een goed uitgangspunt voor de rest van de wedstrijd.”
Morgen staat de vaardigheidsproef op het programma waarbij de vierspanrijders in omgekeerde volgorde starten van de dressuuruitslag. Chardon start dus als laatste. Op zaterdag volgt de afsluitende marathon met acht hindernissen waarbij de laatste hindernis in het imposante hoofdstadion in Aken is opgebouwd. De startvolgorde is de omgekeerde volgorde van de stand na dressuur en vaardigheid.
The European Championships will enter the second phase on Friday when the drivers will enter the Driving Stadium again, this time for the cones competition. The drivers will enter the arena in reverse order of the dressage results, with Chardon going in last. The marathon on Saturday will be the final and decisive competition. The starting order for the marathon is the reverse order of the standings after dressage and cones.
