Geneva 2024: Boyd Exell gives nothing away
The differences were small today in Geneva! In the first round, Koos de Ronde, Jérôme Voutaz and Bram Chardon were less than half a second apart! In the first round, Boyd Exell was the only one to leave all balls on top and was four seconds faster than the three names mentioned earlier. In the second round, he did the same again and was six seconds faster, a big win for Boyd Exell!Despite missing the drive-off by 0.44 seconds on Jérôme Voutaz, Koos de Ronde was the only one of the three to drop only one ball. For Jérôme and Bram, two balls fell in the first round, but their faster times meant they qualified for the drive-off by a hair’s breadth.
In the drive-off, Jérôme started first. For him, one ball fell and he drove a time of 162.14. So work to do for Bram, he could hardly afford any mistakes! But Bram kept his cool, stayed clear and drove a time of 161.17! This increased the pressure on Boyd Exell, as this time was faster than Exell’s first round. But Boyd also managed to stay clear and even drove a time of 155.66! This meant he retained his lead by a wide margin, what class!
Good sport
“I didn’t expect to be seven seconds faster on the drive-off. I did think one or two seconds would be possible, but seven is really a lot! I really owe this to my horses, they were great”, Boyd commented afterwards. “In addition, it was great that Koos, Jérôme and Bram were so close, I think we showed very good sport today. I also want to compliment the course designer Michael Mayer for how he built this course. It was a very flowing course but still quite technical at certain points. There were a few spots where several drivers struggled, which is good for the competition. My horses will now get a couple of days off and then we will go to London.”
“Yesterday I had to drive it quite a bit, the horses didn’t work together as well as at home. In Maastricht I also had some mistakes, but after our homework I was confident again. Today I think I took good revenge, I stayed clear and was fast when I had to”, Bram Chardon informed.
