CAIO Baborówko, Boyd wins dressage and German podium for the pairs

With lovely sunny and windy weather, the first day of competition in Baborówko, Poland, had the dressage test driven by the horse pairs and horse teams.

Germany’s Anna Sandmann, who performed excellently at the FEI World Championships for Four-in-Hands in Hungary just a few weeks ago, also showed a superb test in the horse pairs today. Three of the five judges put her in first place and with a score of 43.42 she stayed ahead of number two, her compatriot Sebastian Warneck, by more than three points (46.92). Third place was also for Germany: Lars Schwitte finished less than half a point behind Sebastian (47.21) making it an all-German dressage podium.

Kees Koops (NED) also drove a good test. With Jeamon van de Martha Hoeve Texel and Kulano, he drove to place 8. Edwin Spek (NED) got some resistance from his horses and finished in 22nd place with 60.35 points.

In the country ranking, Hungary leads ahead of Germany as Anna Sandmann and Sebastian Warneck are competing on an individual basis. Sweden is currently in third place. The Dutch pairs are on fifth place.

At 14:30, Robert Wilkinson (GBR) drove into the main arena with the first horse team. Very interestingly, Australian Boyd Exell had been asked to explain behind the microphone the parts of the test and how the judges want to see them performed, without sitting in the judges’ chair.

The dressage tests shown were of very mixed levels, but the top drivers presented excellent tests. Experienced German Christoph Sandmann showed a lot of schwung and got his horses very nicely in one block (41.05)/ Austria’s Daniel Schneiders also showed a faultless test with a lot of consistency (47.91). However, Boyd Exell outclassed them today with a very nice dressage test that earned him a score of 37.52. They formed the top three today.

In the country standings, Germany leads, ahead of Austria and Poland.

Tomorrow at 09.15 the first competitors will start in the marathon
