In memoriam: Ton Monhemius

Former international four-in-hand driver Ton Monhemius passed away on 2 March. He was 64 years old.

In 1985 Ton Monhemius began his career in the sport of driving and was successful with both pony and horse teams. In 1986 and 1987 he was Dutch Champion with a team of ponies, and in 1988 after making the transition to a team of horses he competed that same year at the World Championships in Apeldoorn. In 2001 he won the Dutch national championships in Beekbergen with a team of horses, and he represented the Netherlands a number of times as a member of the dutch team. In 1998 he won the individual bronze medal at the World Championships in Rome and took home the gold medal with the Dutch team. Two years later he was a member of the team that won the silver medal at the World Championships in Wolfsburg and in 2002 he won gold once again with the Dutch team in Jerez la Frontera.

Ton Monhemius, ran boarding stable, as well as representing the Netherlands at many Nations Cups competitions, including Aachen, and had great success at both national and international competitions in Beekbergen, Breda, Windsor, Riesenbeck and Warengem.

In 2014 during ‘Mennen in Mokum’ at Jumping Amsterdam Ton announced his retirement as an active competitor, but was still heavily involved in the equestrian world helping his children Bas and Lotte.
