Nederlandse vierspanrijders gaan voor top 3 plaats
The 2009/2010 season is hotly contested with the Final in Geneva to be held for the first time alongside the FEI World Cup™ Jumping Final where the best six drivers will battle it out for the prestigious FEI World Cup™ title.
IJsbrand Chardon maakte eind november een opvallende zet door drie Lipizzanerpaarden te kopen van zijn Hongaarse concurrent Jozsef Dobrovitz. Met de drie schimmels en zijn bruine routinier Kelvin wist hij tweemaal de tweede plaats te bemachtigen in Wereldbekerwedstrijden. Tijdens de laatste wedstrijd in Bordeaux had de viervoudig Wereldkampioen het span zeer goed aan het lopen, maar kreeg hij materiaalpech. In maart kocht Chardon de vierde Lipizzaner van Dobrovitz en hij hoopt met dit schimmelspan op een plaats in de top drie in Genève: “Ik zie mezelf niet als de grote favoriet,” verklaart een nuchtere Chardon. “Tijdens de trainingen gaf dit nieuwe span me een heel goed gevoel. Daarom rijd ik de eerste wedstrijd op vrijdag met de vier schimmels, maar ik weet dat het nieuwe paard nog erg sterk is. De grote hal in Genève nodigt uit tot hoge snelheden wat voor verrassingen kan zorgen. Ik neem Kelvin mee als reserve zodat ik hem kan inzetten als het nodig is. Zowel Koos de Ronde als Boyd Exell rijden met ervaren vierspannen, ik heb dit span pas sinds maart samenlopen, dus het is even afwachten.”
Koos de Ronde was afgelopen seizoen drie keer de tweede man achter Exell. Tijdens zijn laatste Wereldbekeroptreden in Mechelen slaagde De Ronde er eindelijk in zijn grootste concurrent te verslaan. De Ronde heeft zin in de finale: “Ik zie de wedstrijd in Genève positief in, ondanks het feit dat er een gat zit tussen mijn laatste indoor wedstrijd begin maart en de finale. Mijn vader is vorig weekend met twee van mijn indoor paarden gestart op een outdoor menwedstrijd en daar zijn ze goed uitgekomen, ze zijn in topconditie. Ik ga voor een plaats in de Winning Round op zaterdagavond. Ik denk dat Chardon en Exell mijn grootste concurrenten worden waarbij ik Exell het sterkst inschat.”
De in Groot Brittannië woonachtige Exell won afgelopen seizoen drie Wereldbekerwedstrijden en wordt gezien als de te kloppen man.
Het wereldbekerseizoen van de vierspanrijders begon in oktober in Hannover en eindigde na zeven wedstrijden begin februari in het Franse Bordeaux. Van de tien Wereldbekerdeelnemers komen de beste zes vierspanrijders op vrijdag 16 en zaterdag 17 april aan de start in de Palexpohal in Genève. De deelnemers beginnen met een schone lei, maar de prestaties en de ervaringen van de gereden wedstrijden spelen een belangrijke rol in de strategie van de deelnemers.
Op vrijdagavond 16 april staat om 22.30 uur de warming up wedstrijd op het programma waarin de startvolgorde wordt bepaald voor de finale. De finale van het negende seizoen van de FEI Wereldbeker vierspannen wordt verreden op zaterdagavond 17 april om 22.15 uur. De wedstrijden zijn live te volgen via feitv.org.

The warming up competition is scheduled on friday, 16th April at 22.30 hrs. in which the starting order for the World Cup competition on Saturday at 22.15 hrs. is decided.

After an exciting season in which title defender Boyd Exell from Australia confirmed his role as top favourite in each competition, all odds are open for the Final. Exell was unbeatable in Hannover, Stuttgart and Budapest, but left the honours to home driver Tomas Eriksson in Stockholm. Runner up Koos de Ronde came second three times behind Exell but grew into the season and will be able to put some serious pressure on Exell.
De Ronde won his last competition in Mechelen, where Exell came last competing with a wild card. In Leipzig it was Switzerland’s Daniel Würgler who beat the strong competition and took the first place, guaranteeing a starting ticket for the Final, as well as his compatriot Werner Ulrich who will be back in the Final after his absence last year. Wild card driver Thibault Coudry from France pleased the Bordeaux public by winning the last FEI World Cup™ Driving competition at the start of February. Since both home drivers Würgler and Ulrich have qualified for the Final in Geneva, there will be no wild card starts.
Four times World Champion IJsbrand Chardon of The Netherlands made a spectacular move after his third place in the FEI World Cup™ competition in Stuttgart. Chardon realized he was unable to beat Exell with his current team and bought four Lipizzaner horses from his fellow competitor Jozsef Dobrovitz. He successfully competed with his new team at the FEI World Cup™ qualifiers in Mechelen and Leipzig, where he came second. Some bad luck at the last competition in Bordeaux made Chardon drop to the sixth place in the standings. But knowing the four times World Champion, he will put everything at stake to put the pressure on his fellow competitors in the Palexpo arena on 16th and 17th April.
